Couples Therapy
What is Couples Therapy like?
Just like with any therapy, an important piece is the approach of the therapist and the therapeutic fit. I practice couples therapy with a mixture of empirically supported therapies (Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) and various eclectic interventions and approaches from Emotionally Focused Therapy, Imago Relationship Therapy, Gottman’s Sound Relationship House, Object Relations Therapy, and lastly Structural/Strategic Family Therapy.
Aside from the academic theoretical approaches, I choose to lean heavily on playfulness, humor, and intuition in the work I do with my couples. I believe a key facet to a happy relationship is light-heartedness and fun. I model this in my approach. It is not uncommon for my couples to go from discussing an argument during session, to laughing about it with each other once they learn about their auto-pilot and cultivate more awareness.
Our goals are to turn towards each other and lean into connection more gracefully.
Can I Use My Insurance For Couples Therapy?
The major necessary component for Couples Therapy to be covered by insurance is Medical Necessity. For instance, if one of the partners endures: Disordered Eating (active or in remission), Substance Use/Addiction (harm reduction or in recovery), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or a mood/personality disorder that impacts the couple dyad.
The insurance company wants to see that the work done with the therapist focuses on the patient’s symptoms of their diagnoses and brings their partner into sessions to support the individual struggling with their symptomology.
What Else Do We Need to Know?
Consultation Call: We will begin with a 10-15 minute consultation call with both partners on the phone. I use this call to learn what brings you to seek my assistance. I will answer any questions you have about couples therapy, my work with couples, administrative or financial concerns. We will decide upon a cadence and price point that works for all parties involved. My recommendation is a 6-month commitment.
Cadence: In the first month we will meet 3 or 4 times. In the following months we will meet no less than twice per month, every two weeks. There may be an opportunity to meet individually with each partner for a session, however this must be discussed in session to iron out the purpose.
Cost & Financial Assistance:
I have adopted a standard rate and financial assistance model. For those who can afford to pay the full rate, you open up opportunity for those who cannot afford the full rate to still seek my services and receive quality care.
55-minute virtual session: $225
55-minute in-person session: $275 currently on waitlist for Early 2025
